A Green building focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use – energy, water, and materials – while reducing building impact on human health and the environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. Green Buildings should be designed and operated to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on its surroundings.- Green buildings are designed to save energy and resources, recycle materials and minimise the emission of toxic substances throughout its life cycle.

In Malaysia, the government has set up a framework which will be referred to as the "Green Building Index" for evaluating the environmental design and performance of Malaysian buildings. The GBI rating system was developed jointly by the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects. The motivation behind this inventory is to structure mindfulness among all the players in the development industry on the essentialness of economic development.
